Balance bikes for older kids ages 5 - 10 yrs. OK! Things are getting easier, but you still have some choices. Up until a year or so ago, there was only one 16" balance bike on the market. Now you have 3 to choose from!
Balance bikes for older kids have been wonderous, and you can hear this under Glide Bikes reviews on this site. Kids who were fearful, embarrassed, and longing to ride a bike had missed the boat. Now it's harder. They are taller and big bikes are heavier to handle. Older kids are also more self conscious and worried about embarrassment if they fall in front of family or friends.
There are only 3 balance bikes big enough for kids 45" or taller:
New! Scoot XL : This is the only 14" balance bike now on the market in Spring 2014. Excellent quality, built by a well known bike company in the UK - Ridgeback. This is the cadillac of balance bikes with a seat range of 16" - 22" and will fit most 4 - 8 yr olds. XL seat post avail for extended use up to 24" inseam.
1. Tykes Bykes 16": This is the smallest framed of the 16" Balance bikes with a seat range of 16" - 22". Great for kids ages 4 - 9yrs. Comfortable seat, fast rolling pneumatic aire tires with steel spokes and handbrake. Generously adjustable handlebars (up/down AND forward/back) to get the right fit. Highly recommended. Available in Orange, Green, Purple
2. Glide Bikes Go Glider: This balance bike is the middle range size of the 16" bikes with good adjustability with handlebars able to rotate forward/back to adjust for younger and older kids. Seat range is 17 - 24" though we don't recommend starting on this bike until your child's inseam is 19" due to the length of the bike. This bike now comes with air tires and a handbrake and a patented foot peg that is removeable if desired.
3. Strider Super 16: This bike is recommended for kids turning 6 years of age up to 10 yrs. Starting height around 46" tall. This is because the handlebar reach from the seat and the handlebars are fixed and do not rotate forward but do rotate generously up and down. Great quality parts with the seat on rails for angle adjustability, air tires with steel spokes and high functioning handbrake.
